Nigel Mansell made his F1 debut in 1980 at the wheel of a Lotus. The car was never quite competitive enough to win races, and Mansell left for Williams in 1985. Nigel won his first GP at Brands Hatch in England later that year, and went into 1986 fighting for the title. By the Australian GP, and after 5 wins it looked as though the title was his, then a rear tyre exploded forcing his retirement, handing the title to a lurking Alain Prost. He had two more years with Williams in 1987 and 1988, before moving on to Ferrari in 1989. He won his first GP with the team, and stayed for 2 years. After failing to mount a serious title challenge, he returned to Williams in 1991, and helped to develop the world beating 'active' FW14B. He lost out to Ayrton Senna in the title race that year, but in 1992 nothing could stop him. Mansell completely dominated the season, winning nine races and clinching the title by Hungary, with 5 races remaining. Mansell left Williams at the end of the season for Indycars, winning the Indy car title at the first attempt. He made a minor F1 comeback for Williams in 1994, winning the Australian GP. Always a very exciting 'racer' Nigel was very poular with his fans, if not his team bosses as they struggled to meet his exacting demands.
