Alan Jones arrived on the Formula One scene in 1975 driving a Hesketh 308 owned by Harry Stiller. Stiller pulled out of F1 at the end of the season leaving Jones without a drive. Jones then benefitted from a drive with Graham Hill's Embassy team following an accident that sidelined regular driver Rolf Stommelen, scoring his first two championship points at the German GP. Alan then moved on to the Surtees team following Stommelen's return scoring a further seven points in 1976. He left Surtees at the end of the year and moved to Shadow following the tragic death of Welshman Tom Pryce at the 1977 South African GP. He went on to score his and Shadow's maiden GP win at the wet Austrian GP before moving on to Williams for 1978. After a solid season Jones began to show his promise with the Williams FW07 in 1979 winning the German, Austrian, Dutch and Canadian GP's, securing third place in the drivers championship. In 1980 Jones really made his mark winning five Grand Prix and wrapping up the World Championship in the process. The 1981 season was more difficult and Jones decided to call it a day after a dominant win at Las Vegas returning to his native Australia. He was tempted out of retirement in 1983 by Arrows and then moved on to join the Carl Haas Lola team in 1986 but with limited success. He finally called it a day at the end of the season.
