Denny Hulme
Denny Hulme became New Zealand's 1st and so far only F1 world champion, driving a Repco powered Brabham in 1967. Affectionately known as 'the bear' Hulme beat his team mate and Boss Jack Brabham to the title by finishing consistently in the points throughout the season. Denny moved on to forge a strong partnership with Bruce McLaren, and challenged for the title again in 1968. He stayed with the team in F1 until 1974, and always remained competitive, but not a championship winning contender. Hulme enjoyed considerable success with McLaren in the late 60's driving in the CanAm series for high powered sportscars. The orange McLarens were totally dominant and always immaculately turned out. Sadly Denny died of a heart attack whilst competing in the 1992 Bathurst touring car race, at the age of 56.
