Juan Manuel Fangio is rated by many as the greatest driver of all time. During his F1 career he amassed 5 world driver's titles. However arguably things were very different then as cars could be shared or taken over by other drivers. Fangio benefited from an unbelievable act of generosity by Peter Collins, in the Italian GP of 1956, when Collins handed his car to Fangio, reliquishing his own title chance, and presenting the championship to his team mate. There is no question however that Fangio was an extremely capable and gifted driver, the 1957 German GP at the old Nurburgring bears testament to that. Driving a Maserati he suffered a poor pit stop but then produced a stupendous drive to overhaul the works Ferraris of Collins and Hawthorn to win the race, and clinch the title at 46 years of age. Many drivers of his generation paid compliment to his skill behind the wheel, none more so than his ex Mecedes Benz team mate Stirling Moss.
