Jim Clark
Jim Clark was one of the greatest talents F1 has ever seen. He established a strong partnership with Lotus chief Colin Chapman, and stayed with the team for his entire career. Clark took two world titles in 1963 and 1965. He had near misses in 1962 and 1964, being thwarted by mechanical failure. Jim Clark was also a great driver in other categories, including saloon car racing. He also won the Indianapolis 500 in 1965, driving a rear engined Lotus 'funny car', defeating the American rear engined monsters of the day. His talent was never more apparent than at Spa Francorchamps, a circuit that he hated, but where he was unquestionably dominant. Tragically Jim Clark was killed in an unimportant F2 race at the high speed Hockenheim circuit in Germany. In those days there were no barriers to stop the cars, and Clark's Lotus ploughed into the trees at high speed as a result of a suspected tyre failure. His loss shocked and devastated the sport.
