Passing of Chavez prompts speculation on Pastor Maldonado
Following the passing of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on 5th March there has been some speculation as to whether this could affect the sponsorship of Venezuelan F1 driver Pastor Maldonado and indeed that of the Williams F1 Team.
Both are linked to Venezuelan Energy Giant Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), one of the world’s largest oil exporters in which the Venezuelan state is the sole stock holder. The death of Chavez has triggered the need for a presidential election that must be held within 30 days.
It seems unlikely that this will impact either the Williams F1 Team or Maldonado in the short term but there is no doubt that it will be the cause of some discomfort and concern until after the results of the election are known and the potential effects of the loss of the charismatic leader are better understood.

It all takes time – Adrian Sutil climbs aboard the Force India VJM06
After a huge amount of speculation and an interminable wait for all involved the Sahara Force India F1 Team has finally confirmed the widely reported rumour that Adrian Sutil will climb aboard the Force India VJM06 to race alongside Paul Di-Resta for the 2013 season.
The move follows a prolonged decision making process in which the team would not be hustled into making the decision public until it was ready to do so. With the first day of the final F1 Pre-Season Test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya now in progress and with the news very much ‘out there’ it really was F1′s worst kept secret ‘par excellence’. The news was announced by the world at large yesterday following reports that Nicholas Todt who is Jules Bianchi’s manager had let slip to a news agency that he had been told by Force India that Bianchi would not be joining Paul Di-Resta at the team this season. That was sufficient for all and sundry to announce that Sutil had secured the drive. The decision will be a hard blow to the young French driver who has been competing with Sutil for F1′s single remaining seat and was tipped by many to succeed following strong performances in testing. Force India Driver lineup 2013 edges closer
The Force India driver lineup 2013 edged a little closer today with the team announcing its driver schedule for this weeks Barcelona F1 test. Paul Di Resta will take the wheel on Tuesday and Wednesday with hopefuls Adrian Sutil driving the VJM06 on Thursday and rising star Jules Bianchi getting his chance on Friday.
The team will not be rushed into the final decision on who will partner Di Resta but at least it appears that the prospective candidates have been narrowed down to two. All eyes will now be on the incumbents performance and how they compare against each other and of course against Paul Di Resta himself, no pressure then!
Force India Driver lineup
The Force India Driver lineup remains unknown just a few days ahead of the Barcelona test. The team continue to remain tight lipped on their plans to fill the last available Formula 1 seat for the 2013 season. With the second pre-season F1 test commencing next week speculation has been rife as to who might succeed in getting the drive. This has been further fuelled by reports that Adrian Sutil has visited the team headquarters at Silverstone for a seat fitting. Favourite for the seat however has to be Jules Bianchi who did everything possible to further his cause and to secure the drive by delivering a strong performance at the recent Jerez test.
The teams Twitter account @ClubForce tweeted this afternoon that the driving schedule for the upcoming test will be revealed on Monday 18th February. However it stopped short of confirming that confirmation of the driver line up would be forthcoming at the same time. Force India was pressed for details at the recent launch of the VJM06 but at that time said the decision was in the hands of its shareholders and it was unlikely to be made before Barcelona.
It would appear that despite being hounded for information they will not be rushed into making the decision public. In addition there has been some negative publicity surrounding the financial state of Kingfisher Airlines over the past few days and this could be a potentially much higher priority issue than the Force India driver lineup decision and we may have to wait longer yet.
Marussia F1 team will unveil its new MR02 at 08.15 CET and Caterham F1 team will unveil the CT03 at 08.45 CET in the pitlane at Jerez tomorrow 5th February.
That will just leave the Williams F1 team with the FW35 scheduled for a Barcelona launch later this month.
F1 testing starts in earnest tomorrow amid intrigue and excitement as to who will be the fastest out of the blocks.
